Hi, I'm the Learning Space beyond the school envirnoment

You know me and I know that you sometimes cringe when you hear my name. But that is ok, because I know that you value my strengths more than you dislike my challenges.

 Excursions,

Incursions

My Purpose

I am a unique learning space providing unique learning opportunities.

I'm flexible -  you can visit me or I can visit you.

I'm real.

I assist in the acquisition of knowledge.

I know, you consider my challenges first so let's address them.

I usually involve a cost.

According to Ritchie and Coughlan (2004) while the major motives for school excursions were educational, they were closely followed by cost-effective destinations .

I require a mountain of paperwork.

Planning

Risk Management

Permission

And, I'm usually left to you, the organised member of the Year level team. By the way, that's an admirable quality.

But remember my Strengths will outweigh my challenges.

I am a valuable Learning Space to enrich the curriculum.

The experience I provide can enhance the concepts, ideas and knowledge you have taught.

According to Johnson (2009) I can:

  • provide a non-threatening experience

  • modify or challenge a student's belief systems

  • introduce students to new perspectives

  • make students more resilient

I enable and enhance the development of students

by allowing them to experience:

  • Travelling in a group

  • Sensory, geographical, mathematical, scientific,

  • Social and artistic environments (Lorenzo, 2009)

  • The understanding of being respectful of the places visited

  • Episodic moments which help them to retain information

  • Fun

As an excursion I provide a                                           outside the boundaries of the school.

As an incursion I provide a                                            within the boundaries of the school.

Remember the day we received a hoax bomb threat? That was an interesting evacuation excursion wasn't it?

We live in a beautiful part of the world with many free places to visit in walking distance.

La Balsa Park offers the unique experience to learn more about the intrepid adventurers who landed there on their Balsa wood made raft. Our beach is a nesting place for loggerhead turtles. The views and Indigenous history of our location are vast.

Looking forward to meeting new friends and visiting new places with you.

Yours sincerely,

Beyond the Classroom

L
