Hi, I'm the Group Learning Space

I'm the space where we come together to learn.

You use me regularly, either as a structured learning unit or an informal learning opportunity.

I supplement your instruction as I provide an opportunity to dicuss information, practise skills and cement knowledge and understanding.

I can be used for a wide variety of curriculum and I am effective inside or outside of the classroom.

I work best if I am carfeully structured with participants sharing equally.

I am often given different names. I prefer Collaboration, Co-operation or Group Learning. Each is different but equally effective with your assistance.

Some of my strengths include:

  • Refining understanding through discussion and explanation - Is that what that meant?

  • Giving and receiving feedback - I like how you ...

  • Developing stronger communication skills - I have something to contribute.

  • Delegating roles and responsibilities - Have you completed your part?

  • Sharing perspectives - I think ...

  • Accountability - It is your turn.

  • Receive social support and encouragement to take risks - Yes, we could give that a try.

And my biggest strength:

  • Students are encouraged to become active rather than passive learners by developing collaborative and co-operative skills, and lifelong learning skills.

Yes, I provide some challenges too.

  • Difficulty getting started - Have you seen the latest movie?

  • Members not contributing - I haven't completed my part yet.

  • Inneffective communication - I thought we were doing it tomorrow.

  • Conflict - My idea is much better.

  • Domineering personalities - I'm not sure we need your input

  • Lack of focus on task - Have we only thought of a title?

  • I can be noisy - Consider an app or a poster

So what do you need to do?

  • Identify the instructional objectives - what do you want achieved?

  • Make the task stimulating and challenging

  • Decide on group size

  • Decide on the division of students - mixed ability, peer groups?

  • Allow time
